13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. (NKJV)
In today’s world, we all go through trying circumstances. In fact, the Bible tells us in Matthew 5:45 that “He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” In this imperfect world where sin abides, sooner or later we all get rained on. I’m sure that is why Jesus said, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34 NIV)
In this troubled world, I believe that we can make a difference in at least one person’s life every day. As we go to work, school, the grocery store, gas station, and so on, we can make a difference by our attitude, our words, and our actions.
Even if you’re having one of those rainy days, it doesn’t have to stay that way. You can part the clouds and let some sunshine into your day. The key is to get your mind off yourself and brighten someone else’s day. You can accomplish this by doing something good for someone. It could mean simply complimenting a stranger, co-worker, or neighbor.
That is what Jesus did. The Word of God tells us in Acts 10:38 that Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. Jesus went around doing good everywhere He went. We can too.
However, when we get right down to it, what does “good” mean? It is a commonly used word. Yet, the whole concept of good and goodness actually comes from the concept of love. We know this is true because God is love and His love is demonstrated by His goodness.
Words like bountiful, agreeable, pleasant, ample, and full indicate that goodness can flow out of our hearts like an abundant overflow. That is what happens when you follow Jesus and let the Holy Spirit lead you.
The same anointing power that was on Jesus is available to every born-again, Spirit-filled believer. God’s love and healing power can flow out of us to help and heal people in this world—and it can all start with doing good.
On a small scale, a kind word can bring healing to a hurting heart. Look for opportunities to speak kind words to people everywhere you go in your daily life.
If you see a need and have the ability to meet it, do it. Giving of ourselves is one of the best ways to do good works. You will not only make someone’s day—you will bring glory to God.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5:16)
Let your light shine!
