One Day at a Time

Down to our Last 35 Cents

By Linda Lee

Do you think that if God says something it is important? What if God repeats what He says twice?
Most people agree that if God says something more than once it must be really important.
Did you know there is a passage in the Bible where God gives us His word on the matter seven times?

Hebrews 13:5 (AMP)
Let your character… be satisfied with what you have; for He Himself has said,
I will not, I will not, I will not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake you.

I recall a time when this verse was a lifeline for me. After four years of very hard work,
my husband and I had reluctantly closed our computer store. The market had collapsed and we
had no savings left. We both aggressively searched for work just to survive.

First one to land a job wins! We took every interview, left no stone unturned,
even carpooled to save gas money.

But God…

At that time our faith wasn’t strong enough to believe for ideal jobs—but we could believe
God for provision.

Philippians 4:13 (AMP)
I have strength for all things in Christ who empowers me.

Philippians 4:19 (AMP)
My God will supply your every need according to His riches.

We had exhausted everything. Our last money went into gas.

When Can I Call You?

I pursued one opportunity—a limousine dealership owner. Our phones had been disconnected,
so I carefully arranged times to call him.

Finally, we drove to a pay phone.

As I dropped the coins in, I realized we had exactly 35 cents left
one last call.

He gave me an interview the next day.

The interview went well, and I felt confident—but I needed a firm answer because we had no money left to follow up.

A Signup Bonus

Driving home, we prayed and believed God for the job.

I said to my husband:

“You know what we need? A signup bonus like an NFL player.”

It sounded unrealistic—but I meant it.

The next day, we used our last 35 cents to make the call.

Hebrews 4:16
Let us boldly come to the throne of grace… to find help in time of need.

I got the job.

God Was Listening

On my first day, after orientation, my boss called me into his office and said:

“Why don’t you write yourself a check for $500 and get your phone turned back on?”

$500! That was our miracle—our “signup bonus.”

Psalm 37:4 (AMP)
Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

God is so very good.

Psalm 84:11-12
No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Psalm 23:6
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.

God has promised that when we trust Him, He will provide—even when we fail.

Psalm 23:1
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalm 37:23-25
I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.

He wants to help us. Sometimes it’s as simple as turning to Him, asking,
and letting Him work.
